Sun drying

The sun brought warmth into the shop today yet my fingertips were numb, I utilised the warmth and puts some pots out to dry. I felt happy to see the sun today, it makes living here even more magic. The cake of young puehr Mansai has suffered the effects of damp and has started to grow tiny green spores. I have removed the areas of spoilt leaves but will keep the rest, I hope I just got there in time because it is a beautiful and pungent tea I bought especially.

I am feeling positive that things can only get more powerful now this year.

Because the Mansai was spoilt I had some 80's Lui Bao instead, luckily some guests came and I shared it too.

January started with a firing and a trip to London with Michel to do a show in Mayfair, It was a very quick turnover, I havent processed the images yet, but will this weekend.

I had a great day in the studio, sold a few pots today and Steven started filming some short passages for his project. The pottery will be captured in time.....

I have startd production of the Eden project commission, I slipped the first 150 today and they are starting to dry. I have an electric wheel now which is quite a revolution for Boscean pottery, Its really helping to allow a steady production rate.

I have been drinking wild Bansha and green mulberry pakchong thailand tea from postcard teas, both very warming and comforting for this hail driven wind rattled moon slither of a day.

This week I have rested after firing two kilns at Michel Francois pottery. We fired a Tenmoku kiln on friday and then a big kiln on saturday. The results were happy and lifts the weight of all the hard work of january and february. I filled the big kiln with domestic ware, teaware and sakeware plus a few bottle vases and porcelain pieces which I do not usually make.

There were a few test glazes this time including one made purely from Granite and woodash. I also tested ten materials I have collected from cliffs and rivers over the past couple of months with interesting results. I am happy to have new teaware.

I thank Michel for supporting me and letting me use his recipes, workshop and kilns, for the food and friendship. I also thank rob for his insight into glazes and materials testing.

I was asked to make pots for the Lander gallery in truro at christmas, I knew it would be a tight squeeze to get stock to them by the 15th of january because of slow drying times. Michel helped me out and we fired hisbig gas kiln together, the highlight was glazing until 4.30 in the morning and then sleeping in my car. So the pots are in truro and quite happy with the finishes. I used lighter glazes such as Celadon, woodash glaze and Karatsu glaze wihich came out lavender colour, slightly questionable but strangely likeable. It has led me into more production but at last I have started making Sake and teaware. I have fallen in love with Mino tea caddies.

Meanwhile Boscean has been cold and beautiful, the pipes froze and burst (only outside), the bills are unpayeable. I have been collecting samples of clay that I have found on the cliff paths.

The last two weeks have been busy, finishing whatever before the christmas break. Im still a yardsman but have made a few pots. I havent put any pictures of the first firing yet. I havent really had much patience these last couple of days or maybe its just been tested 'sorely'!

I have had many thoughts on the mystic realm these last week and my dreams have taken me far into their adventures. I believe in the mystic. The unseen and unknown that effects all of us more than we will ever know.

Just a short post to say first pots being made at Boscean pottery. Little snow and hail this week as winter kicks in, these pictures are actually a bit late but I have limited access to internet at the moment. The workshop and house are so cold and im wearing about 7 layers a day, the pots arent dryng out very well but have enjoyed making them. Im using quite a heavy kickwheel and it's working for me well. Im stocking up wood for the kiln and spending hours preparing my funding bids. Can't wait to see my family and take time away at christmas but also love the quietude of my present existence, it has come at a brilliant time, 24 years old.

I am putting together a website for my pottery business in St. Just (http://www.bodillypottery.co.uk/) is under construction. Over the last week I have taken a few shots for the site and for postcards, etc..

I am working on finding the funding for my business. I am building and planning a kiln site and pizza /pasty oven at Boscean pottery. My business involves communities such as St.just community(local), Cornish craft the general pottery community and the Chinese tea community with its base in Church street, Falmouth.

Boscean cottage

I have moved to kenidjack valey in st.Just cornwall to reinstate Boscean pottery as a working pottery. I have been here for 7 weeks now and enjoying it also. I havent uploaded many photos recently and have no internet so blogging is on hold. At first I lived in my 1915 British army issue bell tent until the atlantic winds enraged me. Then I slept in the shop for ten days until I could move into the cottage. It was buildt around 17-18oo's and is made of granite. I can se the isles of scilly from my bedroom window on a clear day and the sunsets are sublime. It adjoins a farm and there is lots of wildlife with rugged mining/coastal landscape.Its got a woodburner too. Hope I can make more blogs from Boscean and about my life as a potter/philosopher/man and you will enjoy them. Cheers, Jake.

Midsomers day is the church feast of

st. John the baptist. St. John is the patron saint of Penzance and the name 'Pen' 'sans' means holy head which refers to him. Golowan's celebration was suppressed for a hundred years by the victorians and brilliantly revived at the end of the last century by the local community and is called Mazey day. Everyday should be like that, It was like the medieval times but with spungebob squarepants balloons.

Really didn't have much time for photo's in Paris because we were running a Chinese tea service in the theater (L' archipel) for three days. I live within a society that doesn't know how to communicate. After thousands and millions of years I am here now as a human being called Jacob Ross Bodilly. My instincts are intact but The humans before said that they are 'not needed here thank you very much' and everyone got a bit too clever so that what could do more, does less and the cycle is downwards and sidewards. I want to rise above and be something other than myself. I will use my body as a landing place for my flight into the everthing but then no one will know what I am, but I will have to just deal with that wont I, because empathy is in a pathetic position like an insane victim. Me and Michel Francois are going to Paris to serve Chinese tea at a performance of music and storytelling. All the pots are hand made by us also, a trade little practiced in the west. I have arrived back in St. Ives today and have gone into the archive to give you this!
Every day in St. Ives the same thing happens. A tourist takes a picture from this exact angle near the bus teminal. Imagine how many people out there have a photo from this rather ordinary spot. I am guessing into the billions.
And so I went about the mammoth task of grabbing my own little memoir from 'tourist picture point', as I am proclaiming it. And hell yes did it feel good, 'oh yess' I thought to myself upon the pinnacle of touristic photographic bliss.
I cant wait for the summer for all the visitors to come again so I can watch them getting their little kicks there at the point, oohhh.
I never knew a broken light would create such a following I would have been reborn as one or maybe a beefburger. Goodnight.

As I stated in my last blog, sometimes us Cornish have to travel afar to find what we are looking for and I ended up catching this bugger on a farm with a field full of perry pear trees and sheep with a warm autumn sunset in behind. How quintessentially English of the Herefordians to think of such an arrangement just as I turned up, jolly good show.

St.ives harbour, low tide.

What with Cornwall's fishing, mining and farming being up the spout local cornish people have suddenly turned to photography to help bring home the bacon. They are using much the same methods as with the old crafts but just utilising them elsewhere. Going far distances to gain a catch to bring home as in fishing. Delving deeper into the subject to obtain better quality material as they would have down the mines and working year round growing collections of photo's for the whole community to feast upon. Local lads play with monster waves blasting over the walls, Penzance promenade.

As severe weather warnings are given to the south of England this week I was lucky enough to be in Penzance at high tide yesterday evening, the light was poor and the waves unpredictable but I managed to meet these young lads playing with the blasts on the promenade. It is a shame though as the daybefore the prom was closed and i'm sure this was a dummed down event compared to that. The prom was laden with sea weed and there were many spectators enjoying the evening battery, one onlooker stated, 'better than bloody fireworks day though intit'.

This photo is a little ode to Edward Weston. I read a small book on him this week and it made me cry when it said he took his last picture entitled 'rocks and pebbles' in 1948. He took beautiful photos that I feel spoke a lot about his freedom when travelling or with friends. Peace and respect.

I think Stoke is one of the most interesting places I have visited to photograph but I never have more than about two hours to do any. I was so lucky on saturday as the sun was going down It showered the crumbling delapidations splendidly. I hope to return to do a more in depth project later this year, I bet I don't get anywhere as good light though, also London and Pari are on my hitlist. Master and apprentice.

An old man and a young man are talking to eachother.

When the old man hears of the young man's achievements he says he feels forlorn that his own life hadn't been like this.

The young man disagree's and says, 'Come now, you have done many things and achieved much'

The old man says, 'No, I am a fool before your achievement'

The young man's attitude changes now and he finally says, 'If you would be willing to change what you have had and what you have done, that is, your natural path as a man I am ashamed to say I will have to surpass you as I follow none of these ideals.'

The old man doesn't understand and changes the subject.
